A deadly cold by ellaine A deadly cold by ellaine
“I’m dying of boredom,” Howl said pathetically. “Or maybe just dying.”
He was lying propped on dirty grey pillows, looking quite poorly, with what might have been a patchwork coverlet over him except that it was all one colour with dust. The spiders he seemed to like so much were spinning busily in the canopy above him.
Sophie felt his forehead. “You do have a bit of a fever,” she admitted.
“I’m delirious,” said Howl. “Spots are crawling before my eyes.”
“Those are spiders,” said Sophie. “Why can’t you cure yourself with a spell?”
“Because there is no cure for a cold,” Howl said dolefully.

Diana Wynne Jones - Howl's Moving Castle

Howl "dying" because of an ordinary cold. One of the funniest scenes in the whole book.
I spent something about two weeks working on it (because I didn't have enough time to do it at once). Am I becoming more patient?

A deadly cold by =ellaine is an older work from this fantastic artist's gallery, but it is still amazing and should be appreciated! Check out all of the other equally wonderful pieces in her gallery! ( Suggested by Rose-Rayne and Featured by aunjuli )

Hahaha doesn't he look perfectly pouty? Our dear Howl obviously had no mere cold: it was an Man's cold. Simply perfect

This is one of my favorite parts of the book, and you've captured it so well!  He's such a drama queen :)  I love your muted colors, and the way you've done his miserable expression.

I loved it too:] Thank you, I'm glad you like it, especially since it's quite an old drawing and I sometimes forget it exists;]

Sophie felt his forehead.

And I'm thinking that's what he was angling for. :aww:

Great illustration! He's grumpy but not so sick he can't cause a huge headache for Sophie. =D All the little objects off to the side, like the things Michael had been running up the stairs for him, and of course the spiders, crumpled tissues, the windows and books -- add depth, character, richness. Really well done. =)

this is one of the best jobs I've seen is definitely beautiful in the whole expression of the word, I thank the fact that thanks to you I knew the book I read recently and finally, I loved it clear that the film also, but I am a book person but also I loved the way how to draw Howl, it looks so good and so consistent with the book is definitely excellent.

I loved that part in the book Awesome picture!! great detail
meronichan Featured By Owner Jun 3, 2010
I loved that scene in particular, because it really shows just how much Howl is full of himself and is a big cry-baby, which was toned down a lot in the Miyazaki version. Well done, +fav.

Wow, this is really great! This scene was one of the best she ever wrote in my opinion, though I really like the one where they're arguing in the backyard over the scrap heap and he tears his sleeve. What a great moment! :)

:XD: BAHAHAHA!!! Okay this is one of the best Howl's Moving Castle images here on deviantart!!!! Well drawn, coloured, awesome image to depict. I love how he kept conjuring up modern day tissues and Sophie calls them handkerchiefs but pieces of paper. :fuzzydemon:

I know this may sound like a silly question, but they would probably have a copy of this book at most bookstores, right? They don't have it in my town's library (they only have the movie), so my next stop is the bookstore ^^;
I've heard from many that the book is amazing... I want to see if this is true ;)!
I love this picture so very much, keep up the good work
ellaine Featured By Owner Mar 10, 2009
Well, I guess, they should. If not, there are always all the on-line book stores left, right?:).
I wouldn't say it's amazing, but enjoyable for sure.

alligatur Featured By Owner Mar 10, 2009
I was wrong about the book not being at my library! My little brother put it on hold for me. And true, there is :)
When I finish it, would you like to talk about it and such?

You're very welcome~
